Ultimately, this is 1 reason I have become such a big fan of Fortnite. It informs such a unique story in such a unique way. No dialogue, no movies, no personality sketches; instead, the narrative is woven right into the game through events, changes in the map, and community sleuthing. It is such a clearly video game type of narrative and Epic tells it with participation from the crowd.
For example, once the rocket found it pointed a quartet of laser-beams at Tilted Towers, the place on the map that lots of fans theorized that the comet would ruin at the end of Season 4. It was almost surely Epic nodding to those notions. Then the rocket entered a rift just a split second before bumping into Tilted, sparing the little city from a 2nd existential threat.
Could that have happened if nobody had considered Tilted since the comet's goal? Perhaps. Perhaps not. It's hard to saybut it surely feels like Epic riffing from this Fortnite community. There is a definite back-and-forth at drama, a give-and-take. And it's charming and fun and validating all at once.
In any case, stay tuned for tomorrow's big show that I will post here when it's live. And keep an eye out for more rifts opening up, possibly consuming things from the map or depositing them there. I'll update this article with links to other reveals and revelations between today and Thursday when Season 5 kicks off.
Fortnite Season 5: Why It Can bring the greatest changes yet
Fortnite Season 5 starts Thursday, together with the standard suite of fresh challenges for the Fight Pass, fresh character outfits, emotes and dances. Epic has released a ton of teaser pictures to give us some hints for what is in store, fueling rampant speculation as to what will in fact be changing. Following the recent live rocket launching event that disperse dimensional rifts throughout the map, there is a very clear sign big things are coming into the game, but Epic Games has yet to show its hand.
