SOCHI Ecco Sandali Nere Italia , Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Stefan Groothuis staged a surprise win in the men's 1,000m at Adler Arena on Wednesday and his compatriot and 500m champion Michel Mulder took bronze in a continued Dutch gold haul of the Sochi Winter Olympics speed skating.
Two-time 1,000m Olympic champion Shani Davis of the United States had to settle for eighth place.
Two-time Olympian Groothuis won in one minute 8.39 seconds to redeem his loss in the 500m on Monday when he fell and finished second to the last. He finished eighth in the 1000m at Torino 2006 and fourth at Vancouver 2010.
"It's unbelievable. When I started, I didn't even know what the best time was and when I crossed the finish line, I was really surprised. It was the best time I've ever skated on a low-altitude track," said the 32-year-old.
"It's great but it's also very strange. The last few days I've been thinking about it and suddenly I am Olympic champion. It's strange but I will get used to it."
Canadian Denny Morrison, also competing in his third Olympics Ecco Dress Nere Italia , grabbed an individual event silver in 1:08.43. He had team pursuit gold from Vancouver Winter Games and a silver from Turin.
He thanked his teammate Gilmore Junio for giving his place.
"It's been a really tough season. I have been struggling with injury. I just want to thank all the team for their support. Especially this guy (pointing at Junio). He gave up his place for me and I would never have a medal without him," he said.
For bronze medalist Mulder, his trip to Sochi is nothing but satisfaction.
"I skated a really good race. I didn't get gold, but it's amazing. I gave it everything I had in me. I don't think I could have done anything better, so I'm really satisfied," he said.
Davis could have become the first male speed skater to win in a specific event at three Winter Olympics but his dream fell apart.
"This one hurts me a lot but kudos to the people who were able to go out there and achieve their dreams, it's a great feeling Ecco Casual Nere Italia , I'm aware of it and now I have got to look for the feeling in the 1,500m."
URUMQI, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Ehat Yasin, 66, has played on the football field for just six years, but since then, has been coaching hundreds of youth players for three decades in China's northwesternmost area.
He is not as successful as someone like Alex Ferguson Scarpe Ecco Nere Italia , but he is regarded as the greatest manager in the remote Chinese town. Even when walking on the street, he is always recognized and called "coach," almost like a local football icon.
Ehat is from Tacheng City, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, one of China's remotest and most underdeveloped areas.
China has embarked on a youth football development program to set up more schools specializing in football, aiming to build up the sport at the grassroots.
Home to 47 ethnic groups, Xinjiang boasts great passion for football Ecco Sandali Italia , but lacks fields and a professional training system due to economic underdevelopment, meaning that fostering growth for the sport in the region is more difficult than in more inland parts of China.
The football-fanatic Ehat wanted to help in this effort. After an early retirement from his playing career, the then 25-year-old man continued devoting himself to football by setting up and managing a school and a team for local amateurs.
He gave up a well-paid job in Urumqi, regional capital of Xinjiang, and instead went back home to underdeveloped Tacheng to ignite football fever among local youths.
However, coaching is much harder than playing, as Ehat soon found out. Although experienced on the field Ecco Stivali Italia , he knew little about theory.
"I had no idea what data I should look at when I selected players for the team," Ehat recalls.
To make up for what he lacked, he went for further study in sports colleges.
Throughout the three decades, Ehat has coached youth teams of different ages, but what remains unchanged is his motto: "to be strict."
"They are just playful kids, therefore I must be strict with them during training and games," he says.
When taking his teams to competitions across the country www.scarpeeccoitalia.it , Ehat has no time for sightseeing. He looks after his players at the dorm, and does not sleep until he is sure everyone goes to bed.
Under his strict coaching guidance, hundreds of youths have reached different football leagues in different parts of Xinjiang. Ehat, however, stays behind, also providing consulting services in many local teams.
"We will invite Ehat to be an advisor in our club. His experience is priceless to us," remarked Baoyin Scarpe Ecco Italia Saldi , captain of the Tarbagatay Multi-Ethnic Unity Youth Team.
PAST GLORY
Watching players on the field, Ehat sees himself three decades ago, when he was in his prime.
His football career kicked off in 1970, when the Xinjiang sport authority selected players to build a regional team. To grasp the opportunity, Ehat rode a bicycle for 27km to take part in the tryout, and he made it.
Ehat played as a goalkeeper for the Xinjiang team and took part in national competitions for six years.
"Back then, transportation was poor. It took us a whole week to travel from Xinjiang to south China's Guangdong Province," Ehat recalls, but the trek never obstructed his love for football.
But injuries did. Ehat had to quit playing in 1976 due to injuries to his waist and knees.
Ehat can't play on the field, but he played on the screen. In 1980, he acted as a goalkeeper of fictional European football team Gold Lion in China's first football movie "Come On, Soccer."
Today Ehat still misses his 'good old days' as a player. "At that time we were all covered in dirt after training Scarpe Ecco Italia ," he recalls.
The dirt field they used to play on has long since been transformed, but "what must be passed on is the spirit of hard work," Ehat stresses.
