MONTEVIDEO Kevin White Jersey , Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Jorge Goncalvez took on coaching Uruguay's most popular football team Monday, Penarol, after previous coach Diego Alonso was sacked for the team's lacklusted performance in the national Opening Tournament.


Goncalvez, 46, was coaching Penarol's junior division before being tapped Sunday night to coach the seniors.


The new coach of Penarol Adam Shaheen Jersey , the current champions of the Uruguayan league, told reporters before his first training session with the team.


"I was always content to be part of the club, fulfilling any role. I know this is the role with the most responsibility," he said.


A former Penarol player and champion of the 1987 Libertadores Cup, Goncalvez added he hoped to improve the team's performance.


"I think that if we win the coming matches Eddie Goldman Jersey , we are going to be ready to fight and scare some other teams," the coach said at the Los Aromos sports complex on the outskirts of Montevideo, where the team trains.


Goncalvez will debut as coach on Oct. 19, in a match against El Tanque, as part of Day 7 of the Opening Tournament.

Alonso was sacked on Saturday after the team tied the Wanderers 1-1, a score that left Penarol in 13th place among the national teams with only five points.
