NEW YORK -- Four games, all Mets. Same story, summer or fall.Wilmer Flores went 6 for 6 with two of New Yorks five home runs, and the Mets romped to another four-game sweep of the Chicago Cubs by battering Jon Lester in a 14-3 blowout Sunday.Curtis Granderson homered immediately in his return to the starting lineup, and New York also got long balls from Rene Rivera and pinch-hitter Kelly Johnson while setting season highs for runs and hits (22) in support of Noah Syndergaard (9-3).Coming into these four games, I think the guys knew that they had a huge challenge ahead of them, and I think they picked up their game, Mets manager Terry Collins said.Before Friday night, the Mets had never hit five home runs in a game at Citi Field, which opened in 2009. They did it twice in 45 hours against a Cubs pitching staff that began the day with a 2.97 ERA -- lowest in the majors by a considerable margin.After sweeping four games against Chicago in the NL Championship Series last October, the Mets outscored the Cubs 32-11 in winning their first four matchups this year. Chicago took all seven regular-season meetings in 2015.It was just a rough weekend. Give the Mets credit, Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. They got us this time. They got us last year. This is a really easy game for me to forget about.Maddon began pulling starters in the sixth as his major league-best squad (51-30) lost for the 10th time in 14 games and finished 4-7 on its longest road trip of the season.By the seventh, catcher Miguel Montero was on the mound to save the bullpen, throwing pitches that mostly ranged from 79-84 mph. When he does, Reyes is expected to take a sizable chunk of Flores playing time.I dont think players are naive, Collins said.Filling in at the hot corner since captain David Wright was injured in late May, Flores entered Sunday in an 0-for-14 slump before joining Edgardo Alfonzo as the only Mets players with six hits in a game.Alfonzo, who accomplished the feat in August 1999 at Houston, reached out to Flores through the team to congratulate him, club spokesman Jay Horwitz said.Pretty good feeling, Flores said. The race was on pace to be one of the fastest in Daytona history until a late accident brought out a red-flag stoppage that lasted nearly 10 minutes. There were only two laps remaining when the race resumed and Kenseth paired up with defending Truck Series champion James Buescher on the restart. The two easily broke away from the pack, leaving everyone else racing for third place. Kenseth and Buescher werent challenged to the finish, with Kenseth taking the win and Buescher finishing second. It was a turn of events after the tandem of Sam Hornish Jr. and Joey Logano had dominated to lead 64 of the 101 laps. "It didnt matter who I was pushing or who was pushing me, we couldnt run with those two," Kenseth said of Logano and Hornish. "But with (Buescher) pushing me, we could. We had speed. So it was important to keep him with me. He did a really good job up getting us up to the lead and putting us in a position to try to win, so I wanted to make sure I stuck with him. "He did a really, really good job pushing there." Buescher stayed put once on Kenseths bumper. "We got together and went right to the front. I knew then I had to stay committed to him until the end of the race or as long as we could with the restarts," Buescher said. "He was the first car all weekend weve been able to push for a long period of time." The race was moving on at a rapid pace with just three cautions in the first 90 laps -- one was for debris, one was for fluid on the track and one was for Mike Wallaces stalled car. The Wallace caution set up a restart with seven laps to go, but racing halted when Travis Pastrana seemed to cut down on Cole Whitt, causing Whitt to turn Pastrana and trigger a multi-car accident. Caught in it was Jason White, who dropped to the grass after climbing from his crumpled car. White was tended to by emergency personnel in the grass, then walked to a waiting ambulance on his own. "Kind of took the breath out of me a little bit. It was a hard hit," he said. "Im feeling fine. Just got to get a little rest, Ill be fine tomorrow." ' ' ' |
