LARAMIE, Wyo. -- Beating its second Colorado opponent in as many weeks is big in more ways than one for a young Wyoming program that won just two games last season.Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen said wins against Air Force on Saturday and against Colorado State the previous week are important not only to the Cowboys program as a whole but to the many players on the Wyoming roster who hail from neighboring Colorado and may have not been recruited by the Colorado teams.Obviously theres some heated tension, I guess, between us and Colorado teams, said Allen, who threw for three touchdowns in leading the Cowboys over Air Force 35-26 Saturday.Allen completed 15 of 27 passes for 173 yards for Wyoming (4-2, 2-0 Mountain West). He had TD passes of 17 yards to Tanner Gentry, 20 yards to Jake Maulhardt and 32 yards to Jacob Hollister. After the game, Allen lamented a couple of missed throws to wide-open receivers that would have resulted in big gains. We played good enough to win even with those few mistakes that I made, he said.Allen also rushed for 74 yards, including a 34-yard run to set up a TD that iced the win in the final two minutes.Falcons safety Weston Steelhammer said Allen is a very dynamic quarterback both on the ground and through the air.He made something out of nothing more than once, he said.Brian Hill contributed 92 yards and a touchdown on the ground for the Cowboys, who more than tripled the 53 rushing yards Air Force had held its opponents on average in the previous four games.Air Force (4-1, 1-1) was led by quarterback Nate Romine, who passed for 188 yards and two touchdowns. Romine was also intercepted three times after entering the game without having thrown an interception on the season.I just dont think we were locked in, especially me, Romine said. That was probably my worst football Ive ever played since Ive been here.Wyomings defense held the Falcons to 149 yards rushing. The Falcons had been averaging 312.8 rushing yards a game.THE TAKEWAYAIR FORCE: The Falcons saw their hopes for starting the season 5-0 for the first time since 2003 dashed.Falcons coach Troy Calhoun said Wyomings offensive and defensive lines had too much size.I thought it was pretty evident that theyre eating well, Calhoun said.WYOMING: The Cowboys have won four of the last six meetings between the two teams. The defense has scored in three consecutive games. On Saturday, linebacker D.J. May picked up a fumble by Jacobi Owens on Air Forces 15-yard line and jogged into the end zone. The Cowboys defense has scored four touchdowns off turnovers this season.Wyoming coach Craig Bohl attributed the opportunistic defense to better speed and athleticism in the unit this year. Were ahead of the curve there, and we just got to keep it coming. I know it helps a lot, he said.POLL IMPLICATIONSAir Force received votes in last weeks AP poll after winning its first four games of the season, but the loss to Wyoming likely will result in voters losing interest in the Falcons.UP NEXTAIR FORCE: The Falcons will host New Mexico on Saturday, but the game will be played at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas as one of the college games during the annual Texas State Fair.WYOMING: The Cowboys have a bye week before heading to Nevada on Oct. 22. TORONTO -- Orioles right-hander Kevin Gausman followed up one of his best starts of the season with one of his worst.Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion and Troy Tulowitzki each hit solo home runs off Gausman in the first inning, Marco Estrada snapped a four-start winless streak and the Toronto Blue Jays beat Baltimore 6-5 on Friday night.Encarnacion reached base three times and scored twice as the Blue Jays won the opener of a three-game series between the top two teams in the AL East, cutting Baltimores division lead to half a game. The Orioles have lost four straight. After throwing seven shutout innings to beat Cleveland in his previous outing, Gausman (2-8) allowed six hits and matched a season-worst by giving up six runs. He lasted three innings, matching his shortest start of the season. This is obviously a big series for us, Gausman said. For me to go out there and just not even be competitive was bad.Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Gausman never found his step against the powerful Blue Jays.He made a lot of mistakes with his breaking ball and just elevated a lot of pitches, Showalter said. He made some good pitches but not enough of them against a good hitting team.Mark Trumbos two-out double gave Baltimore a 2-0 lead in the top of the first but the Blue Jays answered with a trio of solo shots in the bottom half. Bautista drilled Gausmans second pitch of the game off the facing of the second deck, Encarnacion hit a one-out blast and Tulowitzki added a two-out homer.Encarnacions homer was his 28th, third-most in majors.I was just all over the place, I had no feel for anything, Gausman said. I felt bad for (catcher Matt) Wieters, I was just kind of beating him up back there. It was the second time this season and 35th time in team history the Blue Jays have hit three home runs in an inning. The last time it happened was July 5, when Tulowitzki, Josh Donaldson and Ezequiel Carrera connected in the third inning off Kansas Citys Chris Young. The Orioles lead the majors with 152 home runs while Toronto is second with 147. The Bluue Jays have 15 multihomer innings this season.ddddddddddddWieters was one of several Orioles upset at home plate umpire Manny Gonzalez. Adam Jones argued after being called out on strikes in the first, and Showalter came out to break up an argument between Wieters and Gonzalez in the eighth. There were a lot of strikes that werent strikes, Showalter said. Players have tough nights. Obviously (Gonzalez) had a bad one.Making his second start after a stint on the disabled list with a sore back, Estrada (6-4) allowed four runs, three earned, and five hits in six innings.I dont feel one hundred percent, Estrada said. But I still feel I can give the team quality innings.Joaquin Benoit worked the seventh, Jason Grilli gave up Manny Machados solo home run in the eighth and Roberto Osuna finished for his 22nd save.Machado tied it 3-all when he scored from first base on an infield grounder in the third. With third baseman Donaldson shifted to the right side, Machado broke for third base after Donaldson threw Chris Davis out at first. Catcher Russell Martin scrambled to cover third base but couldnt handle Justin Smoaks throw. Machado scored standing up as the ball rolled down the third base line toward home plate.TURNING JAPANESEBaltimore signed former Reds RHP Logan Ondrusek and designated RHP Chaz Roe for assignment. The 31-year-old Ondrusek went 21-11 with a 3.89 ERA and two saves in 281 games with Cincinnati from 2010 to 2014. He spent the past two seasons in Japan with the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, going 8-3 with a 2.17 ERA and 11 saves in 102 games.TRAINERS ROOMBlue Jays: Toronto signed C Erik Kratz to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Buffalo.UP NEXTOrioles: RHP Yovani Gallardo (3-2, 5.37) is winless in five starts.Blue Jays: LHP J.A.
