While goalkeeper Hope Solo thinks she was banned from the national team for her stance on equal pay, coach Jill Ellis said it was for the sum total of actions.Over time, theres been off-the-field distractions, and the federation has taken action, Ellis said. Each time action has been taken, theres been made clear an expectation that this would the last time such a step would be necessary. Sadly, Hopes postgame comments forced us to make a significant decision. It wasnt a decision just made about comments. It was a sum total of actions that have unfortunately shown a negative light on our program.Ellis discussed the suspension for the first time in a Q & A interview published on U.S. Soccers website.Last month, Solo was suspended for six months for what U.S. Soccer termed conduct counter to the organizations principles.Solo called Sweden a bunch of cowards after the Swedes beat the U.S. 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the quarters of the Olympic tournament, and U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati said those comments were unacceptable.Solo was previously suspended for 30 days in 2015 for her conduct after a training camp incident. She will not be eligible for selection to the national team until February.Solo said she believes the U.S. Soccer Federation terminated her contract as retaliation for her stance on equal pay.Solos remarks, made last week after she was notified of her suspension, were aired for the first time Friday in the final episode of the documentary series Keeping Score. The series follows Solo and fellow U.S. womens national team players Megan Rapinoe and Crystal Dunn before, during and after the Rio Olympics.?I feel like Im being pushed out, because it cant be based off performance, my health, she said in the episode. It cant be based off anything but they dont like me ... because they know Ive been fighting so hard for equal pay.Theyre going to use my comments as an excuse to get rid of me forever so that they dont have to deal with such a strong voice and opposition to field conditions and playing conditions and pay. I think Im just a thorn in their side, and its time for them to cut their losses.Solo was among five members of the USWNT that filed a wage-discrimination action against U.S. Soccer in April. Among its claims, the filing said the womens team was being paid about a quarter of what the men earn despite generating nearly $20 million more revenue last year.Ellis said in the U.S. Soccer interview that the team will look to develop goalkeepers in the run-up to the 2019 World Cup in France. After the Olympics the plan was always to prepare for 2019 and that means investing in the other goalkeepers and getting them playing time. Thats still the process and its the same for every position, she said. Everything right now is building towards 2019 and our future.Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
