CHASKA, Minn. -- There will be all sorts of scorching-hot takes and convoluted narratives after the first day of the Ryder Cup. Things such as: The Americans are soft for losing momentum in the afternoon matches! Or: The Europeans are being too sensitive about the hostile crowd! Second-guessing. Friday-evening quarterbacking. Tons of hindsight. You get the idea.Among all of this rhetoric, something might get lost -- something that was the overarching theme of the entire day. That was an absolute freakin blast. This was a brilliant day of golf -- from the first shot of the day, a drive from Justin Rose that silenced the raucous crowd, to the last shot of the day, an eagle putt from Rory McIlroy punctuated by screams and fist pumps and a few bows toward the gallery. If the Ryder Cup is guilty of being overhyped for the two years leading into each edition of the event, then Friday somehow lived up to that hype, and surpassed it.So what if the U.S. team looked too dominant in sweeping the morning foursomes session? So what if Europe pulverized the Americans in three of the four afternoon four-ball matches? So what if only one match actually reached the 17th hole, let alone the 18th?It was everything you could want in a Ryder Cup day. It was competitive and contentious. There were wild momentum swings. There was emotion over the recent passing of Arnold Palmer and tension over the partisan pandering of the home crowd.Maybe it wasnt collectively the best display of golf weve seen all year -- Open Championship, anyone? -- but there might not have been another day that was as much fun.Obviously, theres a lot of energy going around, said Sergio Garcia, playing in his eighth Ryder Cup for Team Europe this week. Sometimes its a little bit on the edge, but it was great fun.The energy, and that edge, was largely provided by the heavily biased galleries. Running the gamut from passionate to over-the-top, fans yelled and screamed throughout the day, and not just inappropriate things at inappropriate times, either. Its the reason why Jordan Spieth continually shushed his own supporters when they cheered his opponents foibles. And why McIlroy, when he made that match-clinching eagle putt to conclude the day, insisted on a celebration that wouldve gotten him 15 yards and a fine in an NFL end zone.Look, its a hostile environment out there, and I just want everyone thats watching out there to know how much this means to us, how much it means to me personally and obviously us as a team, McIlroy said. I bowed to them, said, Youre welcome for the show.Even U.S. captain Davis Love III, he of the 4-0 early advantage and 5-3 end-of-day lead, could set aside his thoughts on the overall result of the two sessions and realize the drama it provided.[Europe] had some fun this afternoon; we had some fun this morning, and we have two more fun days coming up, he said. Im sure well see some more of that.Ah, yes. The best part of this is that there is more to come.If you thought Friday was a rollicking good time, just wait until the weekend, when things really get heated up here at Hazeltine. This absolute freakin blast is only going to get better. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. -- On a night when the Air Force defense was battered and burned, linebacker Grant Ross turned in the biggest play of the game.To think, he nearly got ejected in the first half for a targeting penalty.Tim McVey scored four touchdowns, Ross forced a late fumble and Air Force held off Colorado State 49-46 on Saturday in the highest-scoring game of the rivalry.Colorado State receiver Michael Gallup hauled in a pass to convert a first down with around 1:25 remaining, only to have the ball stripped away by Ross and recovered by safety Brodie Hicks to seal the win for the Falcons (7-3, 3-3 Mountain West). We finally figured something out on the final quarter of the final drive, Hicks said. It ended up helping win the game. There was a nervous moment for the Falcons just before halftime when Ross hit Colorado State QB Nick Stevens in the chest on a play that produced an interception by Jesse Washington. The official flagged him for targeting. The replay booth reversed the call and the penalty was nullified. When I saw the replay, I saw I backed off on (the hit), Ross explained. Thats why they didnt throw me out.Im glad (the game) was on us (at the end). The offense played their guts out. The other team played their guts out. Thats just how it came out. Thats how we like it.McVey gained 184 of Air Forces season-high 485 yards rushing. He nearly had a fifth touchdown, but fumbled into the end zone where offensive lineman Dylan Vail pounced on it.The two teams combined for 1,093 total yards, four turnovers and just two punts -- both by Air Force. The 95 combined points surpassed the old mark of 84 in the series set in 2000. The Falcons lead the all-time series 33-21-1 over the Rams (5-5, 3-3).They made their fair share of plays, Colorado State coach Mike Bobo said. We didnt do the things that we needed to do.Stevens finished with 374 yards passing and two TDs. His favorite target was Gallup , who hauled in 13 passes for 213 yards. The Rams never punted, but missed two field goals, failed to convert on a fourth down and turned it over twice.Air Forcee sophomore Arion Worthman stepped in again at quarterback with senior Nate Romine bothered by a sore ankle.dddddddddddd Worthman rushed for 143 yards, including a 54-yard scamper for a score.Stevens pulled the Rams to within a field goal, 49-46, when he found Gallup for a 7-yard score and a two-point conversion with 6:43 remaining. Colorado States defense held and Air Force had to punt. A few plays later, Gallup fumbled trying to break away from Ross.Michael had a heck of a game and hes hurting about the fumble, Bobo said. But hes going to learn from this and were going to learn from this as a team.THE TAKEAWAYColorado State: The Rams turned in plenty of big plays with Dalyn Dawkins breaking off a 61-yard TD run and defensive back Justin Sweet returning an interception 27 yards for a score. McVey weaved his way through the defense for a 38-yard gain, only to get hit at the 4 by Colorado States Kevin Davis and lose the ball bouncing into the end zone. There was a hustling Vail to fall on it.Dylan came up to me after the play and said, `I was coming up on you, you have to move a little faster, McVey said, grinning. All right Dylan, way to cover me. It was great. This wasnt the first TD for Vail. He said he scored in a similar manner during his high school days in Texas.UP NEXTColorado State: The Rams play their final football game at Hughes Stadium on Saturday against New Mexico.
