Thanks to lefty Chris Salamida, the Winnipeg Goldeyes have won another series. In Game 2 of a doubleheader (of sorts) in front of 1,390 in Sioux City, Iowa, on Thursday night, Salamida tossed a brilliant three-hit shutout with no walks and six strikeouts to lead the Goldeyes to a 1-0 victory over the Sioux City Explorers. With the win, the Goldeyes won the four-game series in Sioux City, three-games-to-one and will return home to play a three-game weekend series against the Kansas City T-Bones with a record of 45-38. As well, with a rainout between Gary and Wichita, the Goldeyes remained 2 1/2 games back of Gary in the wild card hunt. In the first game on Thursday – the completion of a game suspended by rain on Wednesday night -- the Explorers expanded on a 5-4 pre-rainout lead and whipped the Goldeyes 9-4. "We came out flat in the first game and it carried over a little to the second game," said pitching coach Jamie Vermilyea. "Fortunately we had Salamida, who threw a three-hit shutout. He was great tonight." After three straight victories, the Goldeyes were stopped in their tracks in the suspended game (Game 1) on Thursday, but because of Salamidas brilliance, the Fish took the nightcap and won their eighth series in the last nine. The Goldeyes went 8-2 against Sioux City this season. In Game 2 on Thursday, the Goldeyes scored their only run off Sioux City starter Preston Olsen in the third. Luis Alen singled, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kevin Moesquit, moved over to third on a single by Fehlandt Lentini and scored on a sacrifice fly by Amos Ramon. Salamida (4-0, 2.48 ERA) was the winning pitcher, while Olsen (1-5, 6.26 ERA) took the loss. Yurendell de Caster went three-for-three and raised his batting average to .400 to lead the Goldeyes at the plate. In Game 1, the Explorers scored two runs in the third, three in the fourth and two more in the fifth and then added two more eighth as they put a halt to the Goldeyes three-game winning streak. The Goldeyes were held to just seven hits. Ryan Scoma had a two-run homer in three trips. Scoma is now hitting .364. Reliever Chris Bodishbaugh (3-1, 1.86 ERA) was the winning pitcher for the Explorers while Pete Gehle (4-7, 5.01 ERA) suffered the loss for Winnipeg. The Goldeyes returned home right after tonights second game and will open a three-game weekend series against the Kansas City T-Bones Friday night at Shaw Park. Matt Rusch (5-3, 4.26 ERA), on short rest, will get the start for the Goldeyes. Cheap Custom Mariners Jersey . At the start of each season, I really look forward to finding the freshmen who can make a major impact.Diaper dandies have become so important all across the college basketball national landscape. They can help teams make the Big Dance and even get them to the winners circle at the national championship game. There are plenty of notable freshmen coming into the season. Whether these diaper dandies can live up to their high school hype is always a question. Theyll learn that the speed of the college game is different; they will have to get used to the physicality; some have to get stronger in the weight room. This season, the focus will be squarely on Duke and Kentucky.Yes the Blue Devils have Grayson Allen back, plus the return of a healthy Amile Jefferson. It is the incredible class of freshmen that Mike Krzyzewski has brought in that makes them many observers preseason No. 1 pick.Jayson Tatum is a bonafide star.
