BOSTON -- One week after jamming his right shoulder while diving into second base as a pinch runner, pitcher Steven Wright was placed on the 15-day disabled list, the Boston Red Sox announced Sunday.Wright missed a start last week but had said he was 50-50 to make his next one, scheduled for Thursday night in Detroit, depending on the outcome of a bullpen session Monday. But with the inflammation in Wrights shoulder not subsiding as quickly as he hoped, the team decided to shut him down for a few days. The DL move is retroactive to Aug. 8, leaving Wright eligible to pitch as soon as Aug. 23.Its just not progressing the way I thought it was going to, Wright said after the Red Sox routed the Arizona Diamondbacks?16-2 at Fenway Park on Sunday. It just hurts, man. I dont want to go out there and throw with too much pain because I dont want to start compensating. If its hurting as much as it has been on flat ground, you start adding the mound and all that adrenaline, the last thing I want to do is hurt myself even more.Right-hander Clay Buchholz will continue to take Wrights turn in the rotation. Buchholz gave up three runs on three hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings Saturday night against Arizona. The Red Sox will announce a corresponding roster move before Mondays game in Cleveland; it seems as though outfielder Bryce Brentz will be recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket. Brentz was pulled from a game Sunday, and manager John Farrell said the Red Sox are aiming to have a full complement of bench players.Wright had been playing catch from as far as 100 feet on flat ground and said he didnt notice any diminished life on either his knuckleball or fastball. What he did feel, however, was a pinching sensation in his shoulder, the result of the inflammation. An MRI exam last week didnt reveal any structural damage to the rotator cuff or the labrum. Wright isnt aware of additional testing. The Red Sox are locked in a three-way fight to win the American League East and cant afford to lose Wright for a considerable amount of time. Other than right-hander Rick Porcello, who improved to 16-3 on Sunday, Wright has been the Red Soxs most consistent starter, notching a 3.01 ERA and 123 strikeouts in a career-high 146 2/3 innings over 22 starts.Asked if he believes he will be able to pitch at full strength again this season, Wright said hes super-confident.The stuff that Ive been doing with the trainer, from the first time when I came in on Tuesday until now, its been significant gains, Wright said. Its just not where we need it to be. Now that we can take a couple of extra days to really get after it, Im sure itll be fine. The Red Sox also announced first baseman Hanley Ramirez will be placed on the three-day bereavement list. Ramirez went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI on Sunday. Vosean Joseph Jersey . That left plenty of energy for pitching books and swatting away free agency questions.
