Burke Cool Base Todd Frazier Jersey , M. (2011). Reading, writing, relationships: The impact of social network sites on relationships and well-being. Carnegie Mellon University. Objectives Social networks are a necessary part of our lives given that they promote the interdependence and interconnectedness. In the culturally diverse society Cool Base Mike Piazza Jersey , social networks allow individuals to make interaction by communicating and engaging with others accessible through the Internet. The percentage of social network users has increased considerably as platforms become more popular. The communication occurring in online platforms promotes interactive dialogues and builds an understanding of diverse points of view. Additionally, there has been differing findings on the influence of social networks on relationships. As supported by various theories, people desire a sense of belonging fulfilled through support from relationships with others. Social networks provide this opportunity where individuals can communicate with others. They allow people the choice of where to belong through virtual communities on the Internet. While millions of people use social network sites Cool Base Darryl Strawberry Jersey , little is known about the impact on reading, writing, and relationships. Available studies show different findings on the effect of social networks on various factors. The problem is not a new in the world of computer-mediated networking. This type of technology is hailed as positively impacting on relationships. Early studies of the social networks indicate that intense use led to declines in offline communication with family and friends and increases in loneliness Cool Base Keith Hernandez Jersey , depression, and stress. The study focuses on determining the consequences of using social network sites on emotional well-being and relationship quality. Method To analyze the link between Facebook activity and tie strength, the researcher conducted a three-wave panel survey of participants. Follow-up waves were also conducted. The survey aimed at determining the relationship between participants and their friends. Participants were to answer questions designed to reveal their relationships with up to eight online friends. Later Cool Base David Wright Jersey , Survey responses were matched to ties鈥?activities and server logs of the participant on Facebook. The sample comprised of 11701 Participants. 52% of the participants were female while the rest were males. Recruitment was conducted through email invitations and Facebook ads. Only English-speaking users were targeted. The criterion used was that all participants had been active on the site in the previous 30 days. The researcher adopted a multilevel linear model to measure variables. Many studies have adopted cross-section to measure the correlation between the dependent variables and independent at a single point in time. In this study, this approach would not allow the researcher the freedom to measure other underlying factors. A multilevel linear model would allow the researcher measure the relationship between the activity variables. The model is suitable for observation studies such as this as it was impossible to clearly determine the causal relationship between the dependent and independent variables without a randomized assignment of participants. A three-wave survey study design was adopted to ensure that meaningful changes to reflect well-being were detected. The model comprised of a lagged dependent variable. Results The results of the study show strong evidence of the relationship between social networks and well-being. Accordingly, the relationship is conditional; and is dependents on various factors including what the participant is doing Authentic Yoenis Cespedes Jersey , who they are and with whom they are engaging with. Results also show how the use of Facebook compares with other channels. Individuals who communicated regularly on the phone, in person, or through other online platforms Authentic Jacob deGrom Jersey , also communicated regularly on Facebook. There is a moderate positive correlation between communication via other channels and directed communication on Facebook. Communication is more strongly correlated within-Facebook. Those who frequently communicated directly also frequently communicate through passive consumption. Broadcasting patterns are also associated. Results show that one-on-one communication between people is associated with the significant increases in well-being. Passive consumption of social news to a large circle of friends has no additional effect over and above the direct communication elicited. Social network sites such as Facebook differ from other computer-mediated communication since they feature aggregated news linked to hundreds of ties in a single feed. They also support one-click communication, consequently allowing the establishment and maintenance of a larger social circle. Social networks also embed all engagements in a network of mutual acquaintances and friends. Thus, much activity is visible to these mutual friends. The study results are consistent with previous literature that stresses the importance of length of a relationship as a key factor in tie strength. The longer people have been friends in Facebook Authentic Wilson Ramos Jersey , the closer they are. There is a one-standard-deviation increase in duration of Facebook friendship associated with a 尾 = 0.47 increase in strength of ties. Talking in person with ties on Facebook is linked to improvements in well-being measures such as social support. In model 1, the results show that direct communication is associated with improvements in social support. The intercept value is 3.80 out of 5 social support levels for the average person among participants. Conclusion This study explores the longstanding issue of whether the internet is good for the society. The approach adopted in this research is not to ask 鈥渉ow鈥?but rather 鈥渦nder what circumstances.鈥? By taking a considerable look at diverse forms of communication, differences in users and different communication p
