BALTIMORE -- Two rookie pitchers with plenty of hope for the future could end up playing big roles this year for the Orioles and Nationals.Dylan Bundy threw six innings of six-hit ball, Mark Trumbo hit his major league-leading 38th home run and Baltimore beat Washington 4-3 Monday night in a matchup between neighboring contenders.Jonathan Schoop also homered for the Orioles, who had lost five of their previous six games -- all at home. The victory lifted Baltimore within two games of first-place Toronto and Boston in the AL East.Bundy (7-4) gave up two runs, walked four and struck out four. The 23-year-old is 5-3 with a 3.56 ERA in eight games since joining the starting rotation on July 17.Its just a tribute to Dylan and the people who have worked with him, Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. And most of all, Dylan. Good pitchers are easy to handle. Just get out of their way.The Orioles did all their scoring against A.J. Cole (0-1) in his season debut. Cole -- Washingtons fourth-round selection in the 2010 draft -- was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to replace scheduled starter Stephen Strasburg, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow soreness.Pitching in his fourth major league game and making his second start, the 24-year-old Cole allowed five hits in seven innings. The right-hander struck out eight and walked two.He did more than save our bullpen -- he threw a heck of a game, Nationals manager Dusty Baker said. Great poise and great command against a very good offense.Baker liked what he saw from Bundy, too.He has an electric fastball. He reminds me of the old Mets, like Tom Seaver and Gary Gentry and those guys, Baker said. He has one of the best curveballs weve seen.Assessing his performance, Cole said, They hit some good pitches, a couple of pitches Id take back. But other than that, I felt pretty good.Anthony Rendon and Danny Espinosa homered for the NL East-leading Nationals and Daniel Murphy had his 48th multihit game.It was the first of four successive games between the teams, two at Camden Yards and two at Nationals Park. The stadiums are 38 miles apart on MD-295.The Nationals jumped on top in the first inning when Murphy singled for his 90th RBI.Schoop tied it with his 20th homer in the third inning. After Rendon connected in the fourth, Baltimore took a 4-2 lead in the bottom half.Doubles by Manny Machado and Chris Davis produced a run and Trumbo followed with a drive that soared far beyond the left-field wall.Espinosa connected off Mychal Givens in the seventh. Washington got runners to second and third with two outs in the eighth before All-Star reliever Brad Brach struck out Ryan Zimmerman.Zach Britton worked a perfect ninth to earn his 38th save in 38 tries. The left-hander has not allowed an earned run in 43 games since May 5.SHORT HOPSNationals: Espinosa ended a 38-game stretch without a home run.Orioles: Schoops HR ties him with Roberto Alomar for most home runs in a season by an Orioles 2B since 1954. Alomar had 22 in 1996, but two were not as a 2B. ... Trumbo, who also homered Sunday, has connected in successive games nine times this season.TRAINERS ROOMNationals: Baker expects Strasburg to spend the minimum time on the DL. Hopefully hell be good in September and hopefully in October, Baker said. I had to convince him that the risk isnt worth the gain right now.Orioles: C Matt Wieters was activated off the paternity list and Caleb Joseph was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk. Joseph was batting .193 with no RBI in 40 games. Showalter said the move would enable Joseph to get some at-bats on a regular basis, and that Josephs stint at Norfolk would not exceed the minimum 10 days.UP NEXTNationals: Reynaldo Lopez (2-1, 4.37 ERA) makes his fifth major league start Tuesday night. Its the first time the right-hander will face an AL team.Orioles: Kevin Gausman (4-10, 4.11) is 1-5 with a 5.15 ERA in his nine previous interleague outings. Fake Nike Jerseys . As far as Travis Browne is concerned, theres no such thing as an impersonal call-out.UFC heavyweight Derrick Lewis has been asking to fight Browne for a while now. Obviously, there must be a reason for that -- and Browne says its impossible to not take offense from it.Hes looking up and down the top 10 for the easiest fight and choosing my name, Browne said. I dont know how much more personal it gets than that.Im not usually one to talk trash, and I do respect him as a fighter, but you want to test yourself, buddy? Im your man. Ill show you what this s--- is all about up here. The matchup is booked for UFC 208 on Feb. 11, which will take place inside Brooklyns Barclays Center. Lewis (17-4) will be seeking his sixth consecutive win.Its a crossroads fight for Browne (18-5-1), who is 1-3 in his past four. Three years ago, Browne was in a spot similar to where Lewis is now. Hed won 11 of his first 13 appearances in the UFC and was being touted as the future of the division. Reality has played out much different. The 34-year-old looked flat in his most recent fight, a three-round decision loss to Fabricio Werdum at UFC 203 in September.Browne said he didnt want it to come across as an excuse, but admits he was completely thrown off early in that fight when he suffered a badly dislocated finger. The injury led to a strange moment in which the referee paused the fight so Browne could see a ringside doctor.Eventually, the bout continued, but it should have been called right then. That was the weirdest sensation Ive ever had in a fight, Browne said. I looked down and saw a bone poppiing out of my hand.ddddddddddddWhen that happens, and theres a dude trying to take your head off, I didnt know what to do. I got a timeout I maybe wasnt supposed to. I dont know what to tell you.Going into that fight, I was ready to f------ scrap, get down, ugly, go after it. And then that weird s--- happens, it took the wind out of my sails.Browne intends to keep his training camp in Glendale, California, and will continue working with boxing coach Edmond Tarverdyan and grappling coach Ricky Lundell. Hes hoping to get work in with Blackzilians grappling coach Neil Melanson, and add several new sparring partners as well. The Hawaiian native is 2-3 since leaving Jackson-Wink MMA for Tarverdyans Glendale Fighting Club. Following the switch, Brownes focus was improving his hands, and while he feels that has happened, it might have taken him away from the rest of his skill set.Its time to use what Ive learned but still incorporate more of my game, Browne said. Whatever strikes I need to throw, I need to let them go. I remember in the Cain [Velasquez fight, UFC 200], I was thinking, I should throw a kick. I should throw a kick, and I just didnt.I didnt come from wrestling. I didnt come from boxing or kickboxing. These are my growing pains and youre seeing me develop on the biggest stage against the best of the best. I feel the best is yet to come. Keep doubting me. Please keep doubting me. I will give you something to be upset about if you doubt me. ' ' '
